Behind the Design

The Wind’s Gift from Okinawa

Each windchime in the UMIKAZE collection is a singular expression of Okinawa’s natural beauty and slow traditions. The name translates to “sea breeze,” capturing the spirit of these coastal creations.

Handblown by artisans in Okinawa, these chimes reflect the island’s deep connection to the elements — where wind, sea, and sunlight meet craft and care. No two pieces are alike.

At the base of each chime hangs a handwoven tab created by Miyahira Shuri Ori Studio, renowned for preserving the centuries-old Shuri-ori textile tradition. These small woven flags catch the breeze and gently activate the chime, blending sound, motion, and heritage.

Let the sound guide you into stillness. Let the breeze carry the past into the present.

designer profile

UMIKAZE: In Collaboration with Miyahira Studio

UMIKAZE (海風), meaning sea breeze, is a collection of one-of-a-kind windchimes handblown in Okinawa from recycled glass — each shaped by artisans attuned to the island’s slow rhythms and natural beauty.

At the base of each chime hangs a handwoven tab from Miyahira Shuri Ori Studio, created using traditional Shuri-ori techniques. As the studio shares, “Even the smallest fabric can hold memory, tradition, and movement.” These woven flags aren’t just decorative — they catch the wind, carry sound, and preserve the story of craft passed down through generations.

Let the breeze move through it. Let meaning unfold with every chime.
